OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe introduced a bill Tuesday to prohibit the transfer of detainees at Guantanamo Bay to any facility in the United States, joining a growing chorus of lawmakers opposed to inheriting the prisoners.

The Oklahoma Republican visited the Cuba-based detention center, commonly called Gitmo, on Monday with two fellow GOP senators and said he believes the facility should remain open and that military tribunals for detainees there should continue.

President Obama signed an executive order last month to close the detention center within a year. He also created a special task force to review detainee policy and look at options for apprehension, detention, trial, transfer or release of detainees and report to the president within 180 days.

Judge will rule on what defenses and evidence may be presented

Lawyers in CourtAlexandria, VA - There will be an important hearing in the case of Dr. Sami Al-Arian this coming Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 10 A.M. sharp at the Albert V. Bryan Courthouse in Alexandria, VA (address below). Judge Leonie Brinkema is expected to rule on what kind of evidence and defenses she will permit to be presented to the jury.
For instance, at the last hearing on January 16th, the judge ruled that Dr. Al-Arian would in fact be allowed to argue that he was acting on the counsel of his attorneys when he decided to refuse to testify before a grand jury on March 20th, 2008. The prosecution, however, has urged the judge to reconsider this ruling.
It is vital that as many of Dr. Al-Arian’s supporters as possible attend the hearing. At the last hearing, an impressive seventy supporters showed up, which prompted the judge herself to comment on the strong show of support for Dr. Al-Arian. Supporters are advised to come to the courthouse no later than 9:45 to ensure seating. The courthouse (address below) is in walking distance from the King Street Station (Blue and Yellow Lines). DoD Announcement:

The Department of Defense announced today the transfer of two detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to Algeria. These detainees were determined to be eligible for transfer following a comprehensive series of review processes.

The transfer is a demonstration of the United States’ desire not to hold detainees any longer than necessary. It also underscores the processes put in place to assess each individual and make a determination about their detention while hostilities are ongoing – an unprecedented step in the history of warfare.
