Mohammad Omar

FD Editor’s Note:  I cannot fathom why Daniel Boyd would testify against Ziyad Yaghi and the rest.  This is a very disturbing twist.

CRAVEN COUNTY — The alleged ringleader of a homegrown terrorist operation took the stand Wednesday as the federal case against three men continues in downtown New Bern.

Throughout his testimony, Daniel Patrick Boyd reiterated his past desire “to get to the battlefield.”

That meant waging violence to defend Islam, he said.

Boyd testified against Hysen Sherifi, Mohammad Omar Aly Hassan, and Ziyad Yaghi.

The defendants allegedly tried to carry out jihad, or holy war, overseas.

The three are charged with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and conspiracy to murder, kidnap, maim and injure persons.

1219363099mohamed_omer_hospitalAt last, an explanation (of sorts) for the assault on Mohammed Omer by Israeli security officials has finally landed on my doormat.

It comes in the form of a letter from the Israeli Embassy in London to my MP, and refers to the “security check” Mohammed was put through when he arrived at the Allenby Bridge crossing on 26 June on his way home to Gaza after receiving the coveted Martha Gellhorn prize for journalism at a ceremony in London.

He has already seen everything. At 24, he has already been documenting the horrors of his city, Rafah, for six years. He photographs and writes, seeking to be a voice for those who are voiceless, as he puts it. On his Web site Rafah Today (www.rafahtoday.org) – like that of USA Today or Israel Today, only from Rafah – he paints a picture for readers around the world of the horrors of his city, the most afflicted of all cities in the anguished Gaza Strip, in strong and shocking colors. You will see there demolished houses and crushed bodies, tanks shelling people’s homes and lost children. He also writes for various publications abroad, including The Washington Report, several papers in Europe and, primarily, in Scandinavia, as well as for the Inter Press Service (IPS) news agency.

Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer, Gaza correspondent for the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs and co-recipient of the 2008 Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism, was hospitalized with cracked ribs and other injuries inflicted by Israeli soldiers at the Allenby Bridge crossing from Jordan into the occupied West Bank.

Omer was returning home to Gaza after a European speaking tour and the June 16 London ceremony at which he accepted the prestigious Gellhorn Prize.

Dutch MP Hans Van Baalen, head of the parliament’s foreign relations committee, and award-winning journalist John Pilger spent weeks lobbying Israel to issue an exit permit for the 24-year-old journalist. As has been the case before, diplomatic intervention was necessary to secure permission for his return as well. Nevertheless, Israeli authorities initially refused to allow Omer to return to his home in Rafah from Amman. Finally—after missing his brother’s wedding—he was told that arrangements had been made for him to cross the border on Thursday, June 26. Dutch diplomats awaited him on the other side to escort him to the Gaza Strip.
