U.S. NAVAL BASE GUANTANAMO, Cuba - In a last-ditch appeal, lawyers for Omar Khadr will Wednesday ask a U.S. military judge to rethink his refusal to allow the accused Canadian terrorist to undergo independent psychiatric assessment.
Navy Lt.-Cmdr. Bill Kuebler says that knowing Khadr’s mental state as he made statements under interrogation following his 2002 capture in Afghanistan is vital to mounting a viable defence at his trial, scheduled to begin Oct. 8.
Kuebler believes much of the prosecution’s case against the former child soldier rests on those statements, but Judge Patrick Parrish, an army colonel, last month said no to his request for an independent psychiatrist and an independent psychologist to examine Khadr.
