A group of Palestinian elites in Gaza announced on Saturday the start of a hunger strike in solidarity with the Palestinian journalist Muhammad Al-Qeq, who has been on hunger strike in an Israeli prison for 69 days.

The National Committee in Solidarity with Al-Qeq is behind the strike, which will last until Thursday. There will also be a number of other activities taking place during the strike.

The solidarity group blamed the Israeli occupation for any danger Al-Qeq is facing, calling for the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to exert pressure in the international arena for his release.

The committee called on all Palestinians to take part in the solidarity activities.

In addition, it called for Arab and European parliaments, as well as human rights and journalism organisations, to put pressure on Israel to release the journalist.

Those taking part in the solidarity hunger strike include journalists, officials, former prisoners and former hunger striker Ayman Sharawneh, who was exiled to Gaza.
