Shaker Aamer spent 14 years in Guantanamo Bay before being released and returning home on 30 October last year.

Originally sent to the camp in 2002 after being captured in Afghanistan, his imprisonment without trial in inhumane conditions made him a cause celebre for activists and journalists.

Following hunger strikes, solitary confinement and debilitating conditions, his lawyers said before his release that he was “unrecognisable” from the man who entered the prison 14 years ago.

Middle East Eye caught up with Aamer at a demonstration outside the US embassy in London, where he and others were protesting the fact that Guantanamo Bay remains open years after US President Barack Obama made an executive order for its closure.
