Pakistan seeks custody of Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s children
WASHINGTON, Aug 13 (APP): Pakistan has asked the United States to hand over to it three children of Dr Aafia Siddqui, who according to media reports are believed to be in the US custody. Pakistan is also seeking repatriation of Ms Siddiqui, a Pakistani national facing charges in a New York district court of attempted attack on American officials in Afghanistan.
The Pakistani embassy in Washington conveyed the demand to the State Department, saying if the children of the 36-year old Pakistani scientist are in the US custody, they be handed over immediately for their return to homeland.
The embassy once again urged the US authorities to ensure that Ms Siddiqui does not have to go through any humiliation or degradation under the pretext of body searches before and after visits by her attorneys.
It also raised the issue of availability of a female doctor for Ms Siddiqui, who is suffering from bullet wounds. The embassy pointed out that the Pakistani public sentiments on these issues are very intense.
Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani has detailed a diplomat in New York to stay in contact over the issue.
