NY judge orders doctor for Pakistani defendant
NEW YORK (AP) — A New York judge has ordered the federal government to provide a doctor for a Pakistani woman charged with trying to kill U.S. employees in an Afghanistan gunfight.
A frail-looking Aafia Siddiqui (ah-FEE’-uh see-DEE’-kee) sat in a wheelchair Monday as U.S. Magistrate Judge Henry Pitman ordered medical care within a day.
Siddiqui’s lawyers say her health is worsening from wounds suffered in the encounter last month. Defense lawyer Elizabeth Fink said Siddiqui may have lost a kidney and suffered brain damage.
Siddiqui was brought to the United States last week to face attempted murder and assault charges.
Prosecutors say she snatched a soldier’s rifle and pointed it at an Army captain. Siddiqui’s family has insisted she is not guilty.
