Iranian detainees contact family

AMSTERDAM, NY– When Kamiar and Arash Alaei were detained in Iran this June, Ladon Alomar couldn’t believe the news.
For weeks their whereabouts unknown.
No charges made public.
“They are two very intelligent young men, they are passionate to make a difference on the health of the community,” Alomar, the executive director of Centro Civico said.
Respected around the world for their work on HIV-AIDS, Kamiar was in Iran this summer planning to return to a doctoral program at U-Albany’s School of Public Health.

Alomar says he was also planning a study involving AIDS in the hispanic community and working with Centro Civico in Amsterdam on his research.
Both had visited Amsterdam, both willing to put their life in danger to fight HIV-AIDS.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s Iran, if it’s Amsterdam New York, or if it’s any other place or country in the world,” Alomar said.
Their work across the world has led to an international call for their release.
Sixteen physicians signed this letter insisting the Iranian government charge or let them go.
Similar requests have made their way across the internet from YouTube to Facebook.
Alomar believes it’s made a difference.
“I believe so because the latest news I heard they were able to call home and talk to their mother,” she said.
Alomar says the government recently released the reason for the arrest, they posed a threat to national security.
A difficult accusation to fight, but she’s optimistic international pressure will secure their release.
Hopefully in time for Kamiar to return to school in September.
