Algeria US negotiations fail at four conditions
The head of the Advisory Human Rights Commission, Farouk Ksentini, has denied US allegations saying Algeria rejected repatriating its detainees in Guantanamo, while disclosing that Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already informed its US counterpart that the conditions set in exchange of extradite them are rejected.
Ksentini told El Khabar that negotiations between Algeria’s Justice Ministry and Guantanamo Direction have failed a year ago at conditions the US Defence Department tried to impose on Algeria, concerning the post stage of rendition the 27 Algerian detainees, suspected of belonging to Al-Qaeda.
It is worth mentioning that the majority of the aforementioned prisoners used to live in Bosnia and Pakistan, while several of them used to serve in charity associations, and were not subject to judicial sues by government of their country.
The same source mentioned that the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for Detainee Affairs, Sandra Hodgkinson has not told “the entire truth,” adding: “basically, Algeria is not against the comeback of her nationals, rather she has to make efforts for getting them back, but this won’t be in accordance to US conditions.”
As far as the type of the US conditions, Ksentini said the thing is about depriving the detainees of their passports, and trying them in case they were involved in terror cases, putting them under constant control, as well as giving guarantees that they will not return to armed activity, as seen by the US Administration.
Ksentini further mentioned that authorities are to try the detainees exclusively at their own will, without any foreign pressure, pointing out that authorities are persuaded that the US Administration knows very well that the Algerian detainees are innocent; which may mean that they will ask for compensation for arbitrary detention.
